Witnesses who watched in horror as a couple fell from a zipline in Queensland spoke to the media and described the horrific moment which left the man dead and the woman seriously injured.
American couple Samantha Salyer and Joseph Maghe told 7News they had just completed the section of the zipline that takes people through the world-famous Daintree rainforest before the 53-year-old man and woman from South Australia fell more than 10 metres.
“We reached the fifth platform and behind us were two couples. There was a loud noise, we turned around, one of the ropes had broken and we saw them fall,” the couple told 7NEWS.
“The whole tree we were sitting on shook. They were hanging there and then they both fell down at the same time.”
According to the Courier Mail, the zipline attraction was operated by Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours.
The 53-year-old man died at the scene, while the injured woman was flown by rescue helicopter to Cairns Base Hospital, where she remained until Wednesday morning.
News.com.au reports that a Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman previously said the woman suffered an arm/shoulder injury.
The outlet also reported that a hospital spokeswoman said the injured woman’s condition was serious but stable.
Mossman Police are guarding the site until Health and Safety Officers arrive to investigate.
Detectives and Occupational Health and Safety staff prepare reports for the coroner.
