Argos’ Kelly to start against Riders on Thursday after suspension

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly will start Thursday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, head coach Ryan Dinwiddie announced, according to Dave Naylor of TSN.

Kelly was reinstated by the league on Sunday after being suspended for violating the league’s policy on gender-based violence.

The 30-year-old’s reinstatement was tied to a “last chance agreement” that requires Kelly to meet certain conditions to remain eligible. Kelly’s representatives reportedly argued against the “last chance agreement” in a meeting with the commissioner last week.

“I’m sorry for my actions. I’m sorry for what I did. I affected a lot of people: my teammates, my coaches, wives, my family. I’m sorry for the situation. Every day I try to get better, be a better person, a better teammate, a better man,” Kelly told reporters on Tuesday, according to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.

He added: “I know what I did wrong and I have learned from it. I did more than was asked of me. I will never do something like that again. I know I have impacted many people, including the person himself.”

Kelly was sued in February by a former Argonauts strength and conditioning coach for alleged violations of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The two parties reportedly settled the lawsuit in June. As a result of the allegations, the CFL imposed a minimum nine-game suspension on Kelly.

“I’m going to do better. I’m focused on being with my teammates and trying to teach them what’s right and what’s wrong. I know what’s right and what’s wrong. I know what policies were put in place before all of this and now and even more so after,” Kelly said.

Without Kelly, the Argos struggled to maintain a consistent passing offense; the three quarterbacks combined for 1,898 passing yards in nine meetings.

Kelly won the 2023 Most Outstanding Player award after leading the club to a 16-2 record with 4,123 passing yards and 23 touchdowns.
