Draughn boys soccer beats EB in second half penalty shootout

VALDESE – The Draughn boys soccer team had a furious second half Monday night, beating non-league rival East Burke 4-3 at home.

Both the Wildcats and Cavaliers scored three goals in the second half, making DHS’s lone first-half goal the difference in the hosts’ season opener.

Draughn (1-0) scored two goals and two assists from Andreas Garcia, two goals from Jean Garcia and an assist from Mylton Garcia.

East Burke (0-3) scored two goals by Anthony Romero and one by Tucker Chapman. Cavin Bishop and Ethan Bishop provided assists for the visitors. Jaydon Fair saved five shots as goalie for EBHS.

Patton 4, Freedom 1

The Panthers (3-0) remained undefeated with their victory over the cross-city rival Patriots (1-2) in a nonconference home game in Morganton on Monday, scoring all four goals in the first half of a game that was called off after halftime due to thunderstorms.

“Fast start to the game tonight,” said Patton coach Keith Scott.

Josue Yax opened the PHS scoring drive in the fourth minute from 20 yards out off an assist from David Bernabe. In the 10th minute, Tony Vicente used an assist from Yax to score. Jimmy Monzon scored in the 18th minute off an assist from Noah Krogel. And after goalie Isai Jimenez had the ball just inside the halfway line, Abraham Miguel took it, outran the Freedom defense line and lobbed it over the FHS goalie to complete the hosts’ scoring spree.

NCSSM-Morganton 5, East Wilkes 0

The Dragons (1-0) secured a non-league win in their season-opening away game in Ronda on Monday by keeping a clean sheet.

For NCSSM-Morganton, Jai Yalla and Yahir Villa Rodilles each scored two goals while Parker Kelly scored the other goal. Villa Rodilles (two), Gavin Tarrant (two) and Julian Monzavifar provided assists for the visitors.

Patton 3, McDowell 2

The Lady Panthers (5-1) continued their good start to the season with a five-set non-league road win in Marion on Monday: 25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 17-15.

Offensively, PHS was led by Hannah Huggins (14 kills), Reece Edwards (eleven kills, two assists), Anna Lynn Ripley (nine kills, two assists), Soraya Hartman (five kills, four aces, 13 assists), Kate Clark (four kills, three aces, two assists), Kynzlee Worley (two kills, two assists), Emma Griffin (kill, six assists), Abigail Carpenter (two aces, 15 assists), Carly Setterlind (two aces, three assists) and Kayla Morris (ace).

The Patton defense was led by Setterlind (23 digs, 43 pass catches), Clark (17 digs, two blocks, 18 pass catches), Ripley (17 digs, 25 pass catches), Carpenter (11 digs), Hartman (eight digs, block, pass catch), Edwards (six digs, pass catch), Griffin (three digs), Huggins (two digs, four blocks), Worley (block) and Jolann Buff (two pass catches).

South Caldwell 3, East Burke 1

The Lady Cavaliers (3-3) lost in four sets in a non-league road game at Sawmills on Monday. No further details were available at press time.
