Campus comes alive on the first day of classes – USC Upstate

The University of South Carolina’s Upstate campus was bustling with excitement and anticipation on Aug. 20 as the fall semester began. “Everything we do now is about students and how we can help them succeed at Upstate,” said Donnette Stewart, vice chancellor for enrollment services, as she welcomed the new arrivals.

Popular hangout spots on the first day included the cozy seating areas in the library and the hammocks downstairs, where students relaxed and chatted with friends. Many arrived on campus early to make sure they could find their classes. Staff were ready to help, with strategically placed tents offering information and a selection of welcome gifts.

Clubs, Greek organizations, teachers, and librarians from the Spartan Recreation Center were also seen on campus to answer questions and encourage students to participate in activities. At the Campus Life Center, students were invited to participate in Tri-Beta’s Plant Potting Party, where they could personalize clay pots and add a splash of color to their first day.

Chancellor Bennie Harris said he was delighted to see all the activities and was looking forward to an extraordinary year. “There is nothing more exciting than seeing our campus come alive with the start of a new semester,” he said. “It is a joy to witness the excitement and anticipation of our students as they continue this new journey.” He added, “Today is the beginning of new journeys, limitless possibilities and shared dreams.”
