Construction company finds WWII practice bullets in Colorado

AURORA, Colorado (KKTV) – A construction crew recently came across an interesting and potentially dangerous object in Colorado.

The Arapaho County Sheriff’s Office posted a photo of a World War II Mark 23 Mod 1 practice grenade on social media Tuesday, saying it was found by the construction company on Aug. 19. Bomb disposal crews were called to the 4600 block of S. Robertsdale Way, an area that was formerly the site of the Lowry Bomb and Gun Range, south of the Aurora Reservoir.

“When our bomb technicians arrived, they X-rayed the device and found it to be inactive,” the social media post said.

The device was handed over to Buckley Space Force Base.

The former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range is about 100 square miles in size, was established in 1938 and was used during World War II as a site for military weapons and bombing training, which included drills and the use of high-explosive bombs, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Military training continued on portions of the site until 1963. As part of military training, the Air Force, Army, Navy and Air National Guard used the site for training exercises during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
