In A24’s “Y2K,” teenagers fight against old computers and bloodthirsty Tamagotchis

Once upon a time, towards the end of the last century, there was… This computer code was supposed to start a global robot apocalypse at midnight when 1999 became 2000 because of… Anyway, nothing happened. Or did it?

This is the premise behind the aptly named Year 2000The film imagines a New Year’s Eve in 1999, when the computers actually turn against humanity. The screenplay and direction are by SNL Alum Kyle Mooney, who created the fantastic and underrated Brigsby Bear.

As you can see in the trailer, it is a teen party comedy from the 1990s, like I can barely wait for itbut also an apocalyptic horror film. This special collection is reminiscent of This is the endin which Seth Rogen and other celebrities fight against a demonic horde.

But instead of a demonic horde, these teenagers are fighting for their lives against VCRs, old-fashioned computers and, of course, murderous Tamagotchis. And somehow, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst is involved too. The cast consists mainly of unknown teenagers, but the adults are played by Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone and Mooney herself. The film hits theaters on December 6.
