Carney debates with Jones and Potter in race for mayor in Wilmington

Crime and quality of life

The two candidates also addressed issues related to crime and quality of life. They also discussed reviewing the city’s current fines and fees plan and making the mayor’s office more accountable.

Carney spoke of the joint efforts of the Wilmington Police Department, the state Violence Intervention Program and the Delaware Attorney General’s Office that have made progress in eradicating gangs.

He said when he knocks on doors, people say they want a safe neighborhood.

“Most residents are more concerned about nuisance crimes such as break-ins and vandalism, as well as problems with vacant homes,” he said. “They want a stronger police presence in their neighborhoods.”

Jones-Potter said she sees the impact of mental illness and drug addiction on some of the city’s residents. She said she wants to reorient the city but do so in a way that includes everyone.

“I would like to see a city where all people can work, where we provide opportunities and options for our young people after college and beyond, where we provide them with real training opportunities so they can work, make a living, afford a home and send their own children to college. And we don’t have that in many places in our city,” Jones-Potter said.

Carney said everyone wants clean, safe neighborhoods and good-paying jobs. He said his 40 years of government experience makes him the best choice for mayor.

“As mayor, I will work to improve public education in our schools, expand access to affordable housing, protect taxpayer dollars and invest in small and minority-owned businesses,” he said. “I believe that by working together, and only by working together, we can create a better city for all of us.”

The primary election will be held on September 10. There are no Republicans the winner would face in a general election. The two candidates will participate in additional forums, including one hosted by the YWCA on August 14.
