DNC Day 2: What to expect on the second day of the Democratic Party Convention

Washington — Democrats from across the country will return to Chicago’s United Center and McCormick Place on Tuesday for the second day of Democratic National Convention while the party continues to promote its new program.

The opening day of the convention featured a surprise appearance and brief remarks by Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s new candidate, who used the moment to celebrate President Biden before his keynote speech.

Mr Biden, the decided to leave the race Less than a month ago, he delivered a forceful – and at times emotional – speech at the end of the first day of the party’s convention, reflecting on his five-decade career, hailing his accomplishments in office and heaping praise on Harris as he passed the baton to her.

The President’s speech was capped by remarks from a number of prominent Democrats, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and First Lady Jill Biden. Monday also featured party business such as voting on the party platform, and delegates held a ceremonial vote to make Minnesota Governor Tim Walz the party’s vice presidential nominee. A similar vote is expected for Harris on Tuesday.

What’s on the agenda?

Each day of the convention will have a theme related to the slogan “For the People, For Our Future.” Tuesday’s theme is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” and the party will outline the choice between Harris and Trump and its future prospects.

There will also be a ceremonial roll call vote on Tuesday to select the party’s nominee, although Harris was officially named the nominee through a virtual roll call vote earlier this month.

Who is speaking?

Although the official schedule has not yet been released, several prominent Democrats are expected to deliver speeches on the second day of the convention, with former President Barack Obama delivering the keynote address.

Former first lady Michelle Obama will also speak at the convention on Tuesday, a source familiar with the plans told CBS News. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is also expected to speak, as is Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
