COMMACK, Suffolk County (WABC) — Residents of Commack, Long Island, are still reeling after storms flooded and destroyed the city’s streets.
A state of emergency is in effect in Suffolk County because severe flooding has washed away roads.
The region was hit hardest by the storm and Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, where a shopping center with several stores is located, is now closed.
Cleanup crews have pumped out the water in dozens of trips. The trucks can only take on a limited amount of water on each trip.
The task becomes even more difficult when workers realize how much water is still on site.
A video shows the catastrophic moment when the main road gave way and the concrete chipped away within seconds. Water from Stony Brook Mill’s pond cascaded over the remaining pavement like a waterfall.
The torrential rains on Sunday night were simply too strong for the now yielding foundation.
The county plans to ask FEMA to declare a federal disaster because damages exceed $50 million.
