Angry mob takes vigilantism to two suspected armed robbers in Bauchi

An angry mob in Misau, the headquarters of Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State, yesterday overpowered the police and meted out vigilantism to two suspected armed robbers accused of killing a motorcyclist and stealing his motorcycle.

The incident was confirmed by the State Police Command.

DAILY POST learnt that suspects were lynched in connection with the brutal killing of 25-year-old motorcyclist Muhammad Mamuda Baba Jibir, popularly known as ‘Achaba’, of Sabon Layi in Misau town.

Spokesperson of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakili, in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, explained that the Command got wind of the incident on August 18, 2024, when the police in Misau received a report from a Good Samaritan who saw a dead body lying in a pool of blood at Anguwan Agwaluma on the outskirts of Misau town.

SP Wakili added that upon receiving the report, the Misau Police Division Officer led a team of detectives to the scene where they found that the victim’s throat had been slit with a knife.

The detectives later took the body to the Misau General Hospital, where a doctor declared the victim dead.

However, the suspects who experienced their Waterloo yesterday were arrested by the police with the stolen motorcycle on the Misau-Kari road.

They were reportedly arrested by police and then harassed and burned down by the angry mob.

Reacting to the incident, Police Commissioner Auwal Musa Mohammed condemned the actions of the angry youths who, instead of allowing the suspects to be taken into police custody for proper investigation, harassed the suspects who had already been arrested by the police.

According to him, “They (the mob) overpowered the police, took the suspects from police custody and killed them. This was barbaric and violated the laws of our beloved country.”

The Police Commissioner warned the people of the state that the command under his leadership will not tolerate or allow any person to continue to take the law into their own hands by killing suspects who were duly and promptly arrested by the police in such an inhumane and unlawful manner.

He warned that no one had the right to treat a suspect in such a barbaric manner, adding that it was wrong for anyone to take on the role of law enforcement authorities.
