Arizona Diamondbacks injury list

Arizona Diamondbacks injury list

While the Arizona Diamondbacks received a clean bill of health for their starting lineup, the team suffered one setback after another in the second half of the season.

Key players Christian Walker, Gabriel Moreno and most recently Ketel Marte landed on the injured list, putting a greater emphasis on Arizona’s lineup depth and pitching amid a tight championship race.

Arizona not only has a chance to secure a wild card spot in the National League, but also to fight for the NL West. Injuries will add further adversity.

Injuries played a crucial role for the Diamondbacks early this season, but the club managed to stay afloat and hit the ground running, especially starting in July. Can they continue to rack up wins with so many offensive players on the bench?

Here is a running tracker of the Diamondbacks injury list:

Which Arizona Diamondbacks are on the injured list?

10-day injury list

2B Ketel Marte (left ankle sprain, Aug. 19) – Marte went down for the first time on Aug. 10 when Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs slid past second base and into Marte’s ankle. Marte left the game with what the club called a contusion. There was no imaging.

Marte returned to the lineup two days later, but left the game after his first batting appearance. The club then cited a mild ankle sprain and kept him out of the lineup for three days. He returned on August 17 as a designated hitter and pinch hitter the following day. However, he collapsed after a check swing and needed help leaving the field. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back and landed him on the injured list.

C Gabriel Moreno (left adductor strain, Aug. 6) – Moreno went down hard while giving up an infield single in Cleveland. Surgery was ruled out, but Moreno’s timetable was less clear than Walker’s. Arizona called up Adrian Del Castillo to fill the gap. Manager Torey Lovullo has expressed confidence that Moreno will return this season.

1B Christian Walker (left oblique strain, July 30) – Walker felt tightness before a game and the feeling got worse until he had to leave. He suffered a mild oblique strain and Walker expressed belief he could return to the lineup about three weeks later. The injury occurred just before the trade deadline and Arizona traded Josh Bell to replace him.

60-day injured list

RHP Bryce Jarvis (sprained right elbow, retroactive to July 31) – Jarvis likely won’t pitch for the Diamondbacks in 2024 after posting a 3.19 ERA in 59.1 innings. Surgery is unlikely for the right-hander.

LHP Kyle Nelson (thoracic outlet syndrome, April 23) – Lovullo said Nelson will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery with Dr. Gregory Pearl on May 6.

RHP Drey Jameson (Tommy John Surgery) – Jameson is out for the remainder of the season.

Minor League players on the IL

SS Jordan Lawlar (right thumb surgery, March 28; hamstring strain, June 17) – Lawlar suffered a torn ACL in his thumb just before the season and was placed on the 60-day IL. After two months, Lawlar made a triumphant comeback on June 11, posting a .400 batting average with a 1.179 OPS in four games before a hamstring injury placed him back on the IL on June 17. During a rehab assignment in early July, Lawlar suffered a setback that sidelined him for 6-8 weeks.
