CFL re-hires former NFL quarterback Chad Kelly under last-chance deal

CFL quarterback Chad Kelly, the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023, is back after a nine-game suspension.

Commissioner Randy Ambrosie has Kelly reinstated about a “last chance” agreement.

The Argonauts went 5-4 without Kelly. Kelly was suspended following an investigation that began after a former employee filed a harassment lawsuit against Kelly and the team.

“That is a important step for Chadwho has taken full responsibility for his actions and represents just the beginning of his continued commitment to better himself and learn from this experience,” Argos GM Mike Clemons said Sunday, via the Associated Press. “There continues to be a lot of work to be done to strengthen our team culture and we are all committed to working on that together as a team with Chad’s return.”

“I am sorry for my actions and the impact they have had on many people personally, the Toronto Argonauts and the CFL,” Kelly said in a team statement. “I know this is just one step on the road to my recovery, but it is an important step and I am committed to doing what is necessary to be a better teammate, colleague and person.”

Kelly must continue to undergo mandatory counseling and examination. The terms of the ongoing procedure are confidential.

Kelly was the last pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and spent two years with the Broncos and two with the Colts before heading to Canada in 2022. He came off the bench and led the Argos to a Grey Cup victory in his first year, becoming a full-time starter and star player in his second year.
