New residential and commercial development seeks approval from Marion County Council

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – As more people move to North Central Florida, Marion County officials are considering another new housing project.

County commissioners will decide whether or not to approve a 36,000-square-foot project near On Top of the World during their meeting Tuesday.

The location is between SW 103rd Street Road and SW 100th Street at State Road 200 in Ocala.

The developers of Corta Ocala want to build 30 multi-family homes on the approximately 1.6-acre site.

They have also earmarked seven acres for commercial space, including a Sprouts Farmers Market and another Chipotle location.

“I mean, anything is good to grow. Sprouts, I don’t know much about sprouts, I’ve honestly never heard of sprouts. Chipotle, I’m OK with that. That’s wonderful, wonderful,” said county resident Joy Sanders.

Since the project has not yet been approved, no exact opening date has been announced.

A woman who lives near the site told TV20 she would come by if the plans were approved.

“Progress cannot be stopped and anything that gives people income is a good thing. A healthy business is a good thing. So yes, I’m in,” said Christine Heyl.

County commissioners discussed the proposed master plan for the housing development back in May, but sent it back to staff for revisions before giving final approval, due to concerns about landscape buffers and sidewalks, for example.

The development will be voted on on Tuesday morning.
