NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.– A video posted to the Westminster community on Yik Yak this week shows a young black bear running across part of the campus courtyard in front of Ferguson Hall. We don’t know when the video was shot, but it first appeared on Sunday, and Yik Yak flagged it as trending after receiving responses like, “We should name him Yik Yak.”

Public Safety Director Phil Lenz said the campus has notified New Wilmington police and both are on the lookout for bear activity. They are confident the bear will not return as the campus becomes more crowded with students returning.

Bear visits are not uncommon in Westminster and New Wilmington. In the fall of 2016, a bear was spotted several times in the district and on campus along McClure’s Run.

This week’s Yik Yak bear video is likely to capture people’s attention as they will share the Yik Yak video on other social media platforms.

In nearby Butler County, bear sightings spiked earlier this summer, with several bears reported in backyards on streets from Harmony to Evan City and Butler Township.

Although YikYak labels the video as a trending video, it can only be seen by registered users near Westminster College. Yik Yak is a social media app that allows users to create and view anonymous “Yaks” within a 5-mile radius of their location. The app uses GPS and instant messaging to allow users to share and find out what others in their area are discussing.
