Warner Bros. plans to rebrand many of its products, including mega-franchises such as Harry Potter, game of Thrones, Batman, Looney Tunesand many more, in the market for game developers who license to increase their performance and revenue.
WB’s new schedule comes after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League flopped. 2024 is not over yet and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has already been named the worst game of the year. It performed so poorly that the title’s poor performance resulted in a $200 million loss in revenue for Warner Bros. Ouch. To counteract that and the overall poor performance and loss in revenue, Warner Bros. is considering putting its biggest franchises on the market so they can be licensed by other game developers, IGN reports.
This means that developers and publishers will be able to acquire the licenses for these franchises in the future and develop games in their universes. It is unclear to what extent Warner Bros. would play a leading role in this, but it would most likely be a Sony-style collaboration. Spider-Man Series or licensed sports games such as NBA2K.
This could be an incredible thing or a bad thing for Warner Bros., depending on how well these games are developed and (of course) how much money they make.
Considering the success of Hogwarts Legacy—which sold over 22 million copies—or the long-term success of Batman Arkham series, it is clear that there is a huge market for these Warner Bros. franchises. I for one will probably watch every single Harry Potter game out there. And since this franchise is still so popular, there are many others like me who would love to try more from this series.
Harry Potter Apart from that, Warner Bros. has many other franchises that could do well. For example Willy Wonka could be converted into a farming simulation like Disney Dreamlight Valley or Lord of the Rings Movies could make an incredible ARPG like DiabloIt is no secret game of Thrones Fans dreamed of a Crusader Kings-style game for their universe too.
The bottom line is that the possibilities are endless – at least as long as Warner Bros. greenlights the plan and licenses its more popular franchises.
