Vardy: Half-time chat inspired Leicester to revive in Spurs draw

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was frustrated by his side’s lack of firepower as they played out a 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Monday.

Spurs dominated their Premier League opening match at the King Power Stadium for long stretches, but could only justify their efforts with a first-half opener from Pedro Porro.

Jamie Vardy’s second-half equaliser punished Spurs’ wasteful play, as debutant Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Richarlison all missed great chances for the visitors.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, an angry Postecoglou said: “It was a disappointing result for us.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half and controlled the game. We were really dominant with our football but just wasteful in front of goal. The same was true in the second half. When that happens, you keep the opposition in the game.

“We created chances, but at other times we weren’t ruthless enough and we lost our nerve. These are things we need to get right.”

“When you’re that dominant, you have to make sure that’s reflected in the results.”

Steve Cooper picked up a point in his first game as Leicester manager since replacing current Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca during pre-season.

It was 37-year-old Foxes stalwart Vardy who did the damage, despite missing much of the pre-season due to injury.

Cooper said the decision to put Leicester’s long-time talisman in the starting line-up was not a difficult one after a conversation a few days ago.

“It was an easy decision,” he told Sky Sports.

“Three days ago we were missing an experienced striker. He just showed so much joy in playing.

“If it had been Saturday, he probably wouldn’t have played, but luckily it wasn’t. He did what he does.”
