Open worlds are a somewhat difficult feature to master in video games. When done right, they can provide immersive, fun experiences and give players hundreds of hours of quality content to complete and explore. When done poorly, however, open worlds can turn a potentially solid, linear video game into a boring, tedious slog riddled with forgettable activities and uninspired gameplay loops. Due to their unreliability, the mere existence of open world elements in video games can sometimes garner mixed reactions from the gaming community.


However, there are still many great open world games. Highlights of the genre include titles such as The Witcher 3, Elden RingAnd The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. These three games are rich in content, with very little of it being unnecessary filler. Not only do these titles offer interesting side quests with varied, engaging characters and self-contained stories, but they also feature other elements that make their open worlds more engaging, such as high replay value, an emphasis on player freedom, and varied, hand-crafted locations.

Many open-world games, however, also met with mixed reactions, such as Mafia 3, Assassin’s Creed ValhallaAnd Dynasty Warrior 9. While these titles still have their merits, many players criticize them for being quite bloated due to their oversized open worlds that largely consist of repetitive side activities strung together with stories and characters that lack substance or depth.
