Road cyclist Grace Brown secured Australia’s first medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with a gold medal in the women’s time trial on July 27. It was also Australia’s first ever gold medal in this discipline.

Later, the Australian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team won the gold medal with a new Olympic record time of 3:28.92.

The medals uphold Australia’s proud Olympic tradition.

Australians have participated in every edition of the Summer Games since the modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896 and have returned from each edition with at least one medal.

However, Australian and New Zealand athletes competed together under the Australasian flag in London 1908 and Stockholm 1912.

Ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Australian athletes have won 557 medals – 167 gold, 177 silver and 213 bronze.

Edwin Flack won gold medals in the men’s 800m and 1500m at Athens in 1896, becoming the first Australian to win an Olympic medal. Meanwhile, Fanny Durack is the first Australian woman to win an Olympic medal after winning gold in the women’s 100m freestyle at Stockholm in 1912.

Swimming was Australia’s most successful sport at the Olympic Games. The team won 221 medals, including 71 gold medals. Athletics came a distant second with 76 podium finishes.

Australia will also compete at Paris 2024 with a strong 45-man Dolphins squad, including Olympic gold medallists such as Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown and Ariarne Titmus.

Emma McKeon is the most successful Australian at the Olympics with 11 medals – five gold, two silver and four bronze. Seven of the 11 medals were won at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which also represents the current record for the most medals won by a single swimmer at a single Olympic Games.
