Man accused of kidnapping 80-year-old woman in Coventry held without bail

A man accused of kidnapping, attempting to kill and then leaving an 80-year-old woman for dead appeared in court on Monday.

The incident occurred over the weekend and Steven Henning was arrested in Providence on Sunday after a chase.

Henning is accused of kidnapping the woman and taking her to Smithfield.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, it started in Ohio when Henning allegedly attacked his girlfriend, stole a car and drove to Woonsocket.

He then stole another car in Burrillville, according to prosecutors.

Because Henning did not want to get caught, he started a conversation with an 80-year-old woman at Wendy’s on Saturday evening, according to authorities.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, he followed her home, allegedly robbed her, assaulted her and put her in the back seat of her own car.

Authorities say he dumped the 80-year-old woman in a wooded area in Smithfield after allegedly putting a belt around her neck and tightening it so tightly that she lost consciousness.

The victim was able to receive help and is in Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

After Henning was identified as a suspect, police said he fled from police in a vehicle, sparking a high-speed chase.

The suspect was eventually found in a home in Providence.

Henning is accused of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon in a dwelling with intent to murder, aggravated robbery, assault on a person over 60 years of age causing serious bodily harm, and burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

At the arraignment, Henning was ordered to be remanded in custody without bail.

He also faces accusations from other municipalities.
