Texas (KAUZ) – The Texas Department of Public Safety is highlighting the importance of its Aircraft Operations Division on National Aviation Day.

DPS established the AOD in October 1949 with its first aircraft, a single-engine Navion. DPS said the introduction enhanced the department’s ability to meet growing transportation needs for specialized investigative teams, equipment and other key personnel.

The AOD conducts statewide air patrol, criminal surveillance, and enhanced rescue operations. Through air patrol, DPS uses technology to locate and apprehend fugitives and supports search and rescue efforts of local, state, and federal first responders during disasters.

AOD is one of the largest airborne law enforcement units in the country, consisting of 12 agencies, 26 aircraft with state-of-the-art technology and more than 100 personnel.

DPS said the AOD has been recognized with the Excellence in Police Aviation Award by the International Association of Chiefs of Police four times in the past 15 years.
