Liverpool are waiting to see if midfielders can set a new target for January

Liverpool are waiting to see if midfielders can set a new target for January

Liverpool fans need no reminder of the difficulties they have faced in the summer transfer window, with no new faces landing at Anfield so far.

The Arne Slot era began with a 2-0 opening Premier League win over Ipswich Town, but the Reds remain the only top team not to have completed a loan or transfer this transfer window.

Slot admitted before the game against Ipswich that his desire to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad had reached a dead end as the Spanish international remained in San Sebastian.

Despite the frustration of his fans, Slot is not willing to be pressured into making a decision, as Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp are known to have made last-minute substitutions of midfielders who ultimately did not live up to expectations.

Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenbrch both arrived late in the transfer window last summer, and the two are still unclear about their roles in the new season.

Defender Andy Robertson issued an important update after the game, saying the team is “looking to sign more players,” but Slot seems to want to take a cautious approach.

According to the latest information from Football Insider, Slot has discussed the matter with sporting director Richard Hughes and the Dutch head coach is confident of his options in midfield until the January transfer window.

Slot is reportedly willing to stick with his current squad so as not to ask for too much in the final days of the transfer window and to be able to focus on a top target at the start of 2025.

For Slot, a defensive midfielder is the No. 1 transfer priority, but he wants to secure the right target and the breathing room until January allows him to do that, with Zubimnedi potentially being revived as an option.
