Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar closes permanently

BROOKLYN (CelebrityAccess) – Saint Vitus Bar, the iconic Brooklyn venue known for its underground heavy metal and punk shows, has closed indefinitely.

The venue, located at 1120 Manhattan Avenue, has been a cornerstone of the heavy music scene since it opened in 2011. However, on February 16, 2024, the venue’s doors were suddenly closed during a performance by the band Mindforce. The New York City Building Department cited violations related to inadequate permits and improper occupancy documentation as the reason for the closure.

Despite hosting legendary acts such as Megadeth, Anthrax and even Nirvana in the past, the Saint Vitus Bar was forced to close due to what appeared to be bureaucratic oversights. The bar’s owners, who passionately ran the venue as a bar and concert venue, expressed their disappointment in a message on social media: “Saint Vitus Bar, to be continued… Thank you to everyone who came along. Best wishes!”

Saint Vitus was more than just a venue – it was a place where metalheads met to experience music and a unique atmosphere. The bar’s decor reflected its heavy metal ethos, including upside-down crosses and t-shirts with humorous, dark mottos. During its 13-year existence, the venue evolved into a hub for concerts, craft beer launches, themed yoga sessions, and a close-knit community of music lovers.

However, the closure has been met with controversy, with many local musicians and fans believing the closure could have been avoided, citing claims there were targeted complaints against the bar. City council members have expressed frustration at the situation, with some suggesting the closure was due to resentment towards the venue.

Plaques have been left at the entrance, fans have laid flowers and taken thoughtful photos. The fact that the bar has been operating under outdated paperwork since 1953 has only complicated the situation. Councilman Keith Powers highlighted the financial and logistical challenges that contributed to the bar’s closure.

Despite the uncertainty, the bar’s owners have continued to communicate with city officials and fans, expressing their willingness to comply with regulations and reopen. While the venue may not reopen in its original location, there is hope that Saint Vitus will find a new home. In the meantime, the bar’s legacy lives on through “Saint Vitus Presents,” a series of shows held at various locations throughout the city.
