Fashion chain Ted Baker will close all its stores in the UK this week, ending its presence on the high streets. More than 500 jobs are at risk.

The 31 remaining stores in the UK and Ireland will close by Tuesday evening and the website has also been removed.

Ted Baker was founded by Ray Kelvin, who opened his first store in Glasgow in 1988. The brand’s clothing and accessories are widely known for their patterns and floral designs.

Its future was put in jeopardy when the company behind its UK operations, No Ordinary Designer Label Limited (NODL), filed for bankruptcy in March.

Another American company, Authentic Brands, which owns Ted Baker’s intellectual property, said that despite “tireless efforts” it had not been able to “overcome” the company’s financial problems.

Authentic attributed the incident to “damage” caused by a partnership with Dutch company AARC Group and to “significant arrears” that had accumulated during the collaboration.

Ted Baker has also faced economic challenges in recent years, struggling with weaker consumer demand and supply chain difficulties and was among the luxury retailers to take a hit during the Covid pandemic.

All remaining Ted Baker stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland are expected to be closed by Tuesday evening after the company behind the fashion chain filed for bankruptcy in March.

The closures put more than 500 jobs at risk as the group’s stores will disappear from city centers.
