Cross-generational at the Old Farm and Home Days

STONE MILLS, N.Y. (WWNY) – This weekend, families were able to experience all sorts of farming-related fun, including 1950s tractors, water pumps and even the opportunity to make their own Christmas decorations.

The whole thing was part of the Northern New York Agricultural Museum’s Old Farm and Home Days.

Due to the rain, some events such as tractor pulling and the petting zoo had to be cancelled, but thanks to the support of the community, the tractor show was able to go on.

“It was a struggle at first,” says museum president Katherine Grose, “but the support of the community showing us that what we do here means something to them is a big deal for us.”

On Sunday there was no rain and so the tractor parade could take place, showing the younger generation what farming used to look like.

“We’re hoping to get a younger generation coming in,” Grose said. “Some of our guys are getting older and aren’t as fit as they used to be.”

One of those children is 8-month-old Cayce Timerman, a fifth-generation tractor show visitor. His father, Kenneth, was driven around on a tractor as a newborn over 20 years ago.

When Cayce was born, Kenneth knew he had to take him in the tractor parade to try to keep the old farm life alive.

“The more I can introduce this little guy to the old ways of life,” he said, “the more I can help to preserve them and keep them going for longer and longer, for generations to come.”

The Northern New York Agricultural Museum hopes to continue to stimulate the younger generation’s interest in agriculture in the years to come.
