Lottery winners and historic CCNB game are this week’s top stories

As we start a new week, let’s take a look at the news from the past week.

Grocery prices are a big issue for many families. We looked at grocery prices on the South Coast to find out which chain is the cheapest. We compared these stores: Price Rite Marketplace, 139 Hathaway Road, New Bedford; Market Basket, 122 Sawyer St., New Bedford; Shaw’s, 15 State Road, Dartmouth; Aldi, 200 North Dartmouth Mall, Dartmouth; Stop & Shop, 221 Huttleston Ave., Fairhaven; and Walmart, 42 Fairhaven Commons, Fairhaven. The cheapest was the Aldi in the Dartmouth Mall.

Seafood connoisseurs, now it’s your turn to put your taste buds to the test at the 19th Annual Blount Fine Foods New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, on City Pier 3 in New Bedford Harbor. Robert J. Ostrye Jr. of New Bedford won $4 million in the Massachusetts State Lottery’s $4,000,000 Monopoly Doubler instant ticket game.

Ostrye opted for cash payment of his prize and received a one-time payment of $2,600,000 before taxes.

Matthew E. Forand, a decorated 45-year-old New Bedford firefighter and father of two, died overnight while on duty at Fire Station 9.

Fire Chief Scott Kruger said on Thursday, August 15, “It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of New Bedford firefighter Matthew E. Forand in the line of duty.”

He said: “Preliminary information suggests that Matt suffered a medical emergency and passed away during the night while on duty at Fire Station 9.”

The hundreds of spectators who watched the final of the 94th Four-Ball at the Country Club of New Bedford on Sunday afternoon witnessed a historic event.

Dean Snell and Paul Debortoli held off a comeback from Doug Glassman and Ryan Meggison to win 1-up on the 18th hole, securing their second CCNB Four-Ball title together.

Debortoli was the first golfer to win four Four-Ball trophies in the tournament’s 94-year history.

Attorneys for the estate of former Deputy Fire Chief Paul Coderre Jr. are threatening legal action against Mayor Jon Mitchell and the city in connection with Coderre’s violent death.

Coderre, 55, was shot and killed by police on Dec. 29, 2023, after a standoff at the Bayside Lounge in Fairhaven, where Coderre had lunch and drinks with friends and other members of the Bristol County Fire Chiefs Association.

Donna Balut of New Bedford won $1 million playing the Massachusetts State Lottery’s $2,000,000 50X Cashword $10 instant ticket game.

Balut chose to receive her prize in the form of a lump sum payment of $650,000 before taxes.
