5 things you should know today, August 19, in Montgomery County

It’s Monday, August 19. Here are five things to know about Montgomery County. Check the forecast.

1. Countdown to the first day of school: In one week, more than 160,000 students will begin or return to school. Families may find these resources helpful:

2. Check before departure: Many recreational facilities are closed this week for cleaning. Swim centers closed this week include the Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Center, which is closed until Sept. 2, and the Olney Swim Center, which is closed until Aug. 25. The East County, Long Branch, Mid-County, Plum Gar, Upper County and Wheaton recreation centers are closed for cleaning until Aug. 25.

3. Life-size Angry Birds: Children ages 6 and up can play with a life-sized version of Angry Birds at the Olney Library. Help the Angry Birds save their eggs from the green pigs on Monday from 3-4 p.m. at the Olney Library. Register here.

4. Council recess: The District Council is currently in recess and will resume its regular business in September.

5. Municipal Monday: The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council are not meeting today. Their next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3rd at 7:30 p.m.
The mayor and city council of Rockville are also not meeting today. Their next meeting is a closed session on Monday, August 26, at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater.
