Sentinels lose both opening games | News, Sports, Jobs

The 2024-2025 school season will be one of firsts for the Minot North Sentinels as they begin their first year of varsity sports across the school. The boys soccer team also began its series of firsts.

In the first game against Grand Forks Red River, the Sentinels opened the new season with a loss at home on Friday, August 16, when the Roughriders won 8-0.

Griffin Wald, a sophomore at Minot North, started in goal for the Sentinels and had 12 saves, while teammate and seventh-grader Brantley Robinson added four saves as a substitute. Ebube Asoqwa and Logan Lambl each scored two of the eight goals for Grand Forks Red River.

In the second game, Central traveled to Minot North, where the Knights defeated the host Sentinels and returned to Grand Forks with a 14-3 victory.

Central led 2-0 in the first half when Minot North sophomore Logan Ovitt took a pass from junior Malychi Baldwin and scored the first goal in the Sentinels’ school history. Minot North trailed 15-1 in the final five minutes of the game when Ovitt took another pass from Baldwin and scored the second goal for the home team. Four minutes later, eighth-grader Gavin Wald took a pass from Ovitt and scored the third goal for the home team.

Griffin Wald played the entire game as goalie for Minot North and made six saves. Grand Forks Central’s Sam Christman scored four goals while Kaiden Peterson had two goals and one assist for the Knights.

Minot North’s roster consists of five 3rd, 2nd and 3rd graders, seven 8th graders and one 7th grader. The Sentinels travel to Williston on Tuesday, August 20th before hosting their cross-town rivals Minot High on Thursday, August 22nd.
