“Everyone knows that (electrical) energy is needed. Everyone understands that thanks to nuclear energy, the whole country has been operating without restrictions on electricity supply for the tenth day,” said Galushchenko.
The Energy Ministry hopes that the Verkhovna Rada will soon consider the government’s draft law to complete the construction of two power units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.
They are intended to expand the power grid by an additional 2.2 GW.
How much money does Ukraine need to ensure the stability of the energy system?
NEC Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyi said that to build an energy system resistant to possible Russian attacks, Ukraine would need to create capacities of over 12 GW in the coming years. This would cost 12-13 billion euros (13.0-14.2 billion dollars).
As Kudrytskyi noted earlier, there is reason to believe that the most difficult period of the summer is behind us, as the heat has subsided and electricity consumption has decreased accordingly.
On June 4, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Ukraine had lost more than nine gigawatts of electricity generation capacity due to Russian attacks.
