Storms ravage West Alabama and delay school closings in Hale County

Severe storms caused extensive damage in Hale County and other parts of western Alabama on Sunday evening, delaying the start of school there on Monday.

Severe thunderstorms reportedly downed numerous trees and power lines in Greensboro, Alabama, as well as Uniontown and Marion in Perry County. Downed trees were reported in Brent in Bibb County,

According to reports, about 800 customers were without power in Hale County and more than 1,400 in Perry County.

No injuries were reported at 9:45 p.m.

Due to storm damage, the Hale County School Board has decided to delay the start of school by two hours on Monday.

“Due to extensive damage, downed trees and power lines from this afternoon’s storms, all Hale County schools will begin service on Monday, August 19th with a two-hour delay,” the board said on Facebook. “Buses will run two hours later than normal. Please continue to be weather-watchful and stay safe.”
