Day 3 of the 2024 IVF Va’a World Sprint Championships in Hilo Bay is in full swing, with a packed schedule of 85 races featuring multiple classes of the world’s best outrigger canoe paddlers, including Masters, Juniors and Para paddlers.
Racing began shortly after 8am today, with the final race expected to start at 4.19pm, but the schedule is subject to change. A medal ceremony is planned after the final race.
A total of 495 races are planned during the entire 8 competition days.

This is the second time Hilo has hosted the championships, the last time being in 2004.
This year, a record 2,885 paddlers from 27 nations are participating. Paddlers from Hawaii make up 21.5% of the field, with 621 paddlers from the islands participating.
The Aloha State has the most participants on the water, followed by New Zealand with 589 or 20.4% of the field.
Australia is in third place with 312 paddlers or 10.8% of all participants, followed by Brazil in fourth place with 295 paddlers or 10.2% and the USA Outrigger Canoe Racing Association, which completes the top 5 with 280 paddlers or 9.7% of the total field of participants.
The event began on August 13th, when teams began to familiarize themselves with the track. It will run until August 23rd and could be extended to August 24th if necessary.

Admission to the races at the Hilo Bayfront is free and there are several food and drink vendors and merchandise sellers on-site. Additionally, downtown Hilo has many shops, restaurants and other businesses worth visiting.
