Calhoun County officials search for man after suspected assault in Pennfield

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is searching for a 28-year-old man who allegedly attacked his 18-year-old relative in Pennfield Township on Sunday morning.

While officers were on routine foot patrol around 6:30 a.m. in the area of North Helmer Road and Lafayette Avenue in the city of Springfield, the 18-year-old woman approached them and claimed her elderly relative had assaulted her at a residence on Milton Avenue near Capital Avenue NE, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officers noticed the woman looked disturbed and were told the 28-year-old had used a firearm during the altercation. He was then escorted to the agency’s Pennfield branch for further questioning, authorities said.

Believing the man with the gun and other family members were still in the apartment, authorities said officers responded with a CCSO Special Response Team, hostage negotiators, canine units and criminal investigation departments to set up a perimeter.

All family members and children were taken out of the house to a safe place; however, the man was not found.

The sheriff’s office has identified a suspect and is actively searching the area as well as other locations where he is known to frequent, authorities said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact CCSO Lt. Smith at 269-781-0880 or Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
