The world of DC vs. Vampires gets a new status quo

One of the most terrifying versions of the DC Universe has just lost its most controversial ruler.

DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1 takes readers back to a vision of the DC Universe in which a plague of vampires has ravaged nearly the entire planet, leaving only a small group of otherwise ordinary survivors to eke out an existence in the far corners of the Earth. Surprisingly, it is not the humans of this world who pose the greatest threat to the vampire regime, whose latest attack has just killed the former ruler of the vampires, Barbara Gordon.

The world of DC vs Vampiresalso known as Earth 63, was first seen in the opening issue of the 2021 miniseries of the same name by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, and Otto Schmidt. This version of the DC Universe was identical to the one fans know best until Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, was attacked and transformed by the vampire cult called the Acolytes of Shadow. Dick adopted the moniker Gray Son and led his vampire army in an all-out war against the heroes and villains who still held on to their relative humanity.

In the final issue of the original series, Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, allowed herself to be transformed by Grayson before murdering him and usurping his position as ruler of the vampires. This came at the cost of a carefully calculated plan that, had it been executed as planned, would have put Harley Quinn in history as the ultimate savior of humanity. Instead, Barbara’s rise ushered in a new era of horror that somehow managed to eclipse the era it replaced.

Before the release of DC vs. Vampires: World War VAuthor Matthew Rosenberg spoke about the “emotional cliffhanger” of the original series and what it means for the sequel. “This is what the last pages of the book were always going to look like. Since we wrote issue #2 about two years ago, we knew what we were doing and what was coming,” Rosenberg explained. “The main thing for me is that I wanted to tell a very different story – and fortunately, with a lot of the big guns taken off the table, there’s an opportunity for new characters to shine and step forward. We’re going to create some new heroes.”
