Criterion Collection celebrates 40th anniversary with Blu-ray box set

The iconic Criterion Collection has expanded its offerings to include viral closet trips, its streaming channel, and of course, its 4K restorations on Blu-ray. Now, the Criterion Collection is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a monumental box set of 40 films, including works by auteurs such as Agnès Varda, Spike Lee, Jean-Luc Godard, and Federico Fellini.

Titled CC40, the box set includes an eclectic selection of curated classic films that includes special reports and essays. The collection includes the works “frequently selected by the hundreds of filmmakers, actors, writers, and other film-loving personalities who have visited Criterion over the years, as documented in our popular Closet Picks video series,” the official press release states. “Neither a historical overview nor a Top 40 compilation, this exciting, personal, unpredictable anthology reflects the cinematic joy and inspiration of the creative community that makes the Criterion Collection possible.”

Founded in 1984, Criterion launched The Criterion Channel streaming service in 2019. Criterion and its sister distribution arm Janus Films were acquired by Indian Paintbrush founder Steven Rales in May 2024. Indian Paintbrush also owns Galerie, an online film club and subscription service that offers access to films, essays, and live events, all curated by a rotating group of storytellers and curators including Wes Anderson, Ethan Hawke, Mike Mills, Karyn Kusama, Pablo Larraín, and more. The company was founded in November 2023.
