At least EF-2 tornado damage confirmed in Greene County

Greene County, NC (WITN) – A National Weather Service survey found EF2 damage in Greene County after a tornado-warned storm passed through early Thursday morning. Wind speeds in the tornado were estimated to have reached 125, and it caused damage for nearly 10 miles. At its widest point, the tornado was up to 400 yards wide.

The tornado began near the intersection of Highway 903 and Hull Road in Snow Hill. Minor damage to trees and significant damage to a wooden billboard were noted. WITN Chief Meteorologist Zach Holder noted on radar that debris was being thrown into the air as the tornado exited Snow Hill.

The tornado remained on NC Highway 58 throughout its lifespan, crossing it twice. EF2 damage was noted just south of Highway 58 and Fort Run Road, where a double trailer and barn were destroyed. A mid-size pickup truck was moved or rolled 50 to 75 feet. Debris from the trailer was thrown at least 100 yards downwind into a field. The tornado crossed Fort Run Road, causing additional damage to Fort Run Road and Corbett Town Road. After the tornado crossed Griffin Road, significant damage to farm buildings occurred.

The tornado continued northwest across Apple Tree Road, where significant damage was noted along the Greene and Wayne County line. However, it is unclear whether or not the tornado entered Wayne and Wilson counties. Further investigation is needed to determine the final path length and strength.
