Little League World Series: Live updates from Sunday’s elimination games

Little League World Series: Live updates from Sunday’s elimination games

After the first four teams were eliminated from the 2024 Little League World Series (LLWS) on Saturday, four more will head home on Sunday.

The elimination round is currently underway in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This double-elimination tournament allows teams that lose a game in the winners bracket to still advance to the semifinals of the competition – if they avoid another loss.

On Saturday, the Metro and Mid-Atlantic regions advanced on the U.S. side of the elimination round with 6-3 and 5-0 wins, respectively. In the international round, Canada and Aruba (the winner of the Caribbean region) advanced with their respective wins of 12-5 and 8-3.

Follow USA TODAY’s coverage of Sunday’s four elimination games with live updates and highlights from Williamsport:

New York beats Illinois 4-0

Scarangelo managed to keep the shutout going by getting a popout to shortstop Alex Torres in shallow left field. New York wins 4-0 and stays in the elimination game. They will play the loser of Monday’s Florida-Texas game on Tuesday. Illinois’ journey in the LLWS ends with its second loss.

Ethan Chan keeps Illinois alive

Chan ends a streak of 13 consecutive outs for his team’s batters with a line drive up the middle. He advances to second base on a passed ball and Illinois is ahead with two outs in the sixth inning.

Scarangelo enters the hill

The third baseman switches places with Ruggiero and steps onto the mound to end the game. He forces a groundout on the first play of the final inning and then strikes out the next batter with a swinging hit.

Wanless achieves perfect fifth place

One inning after New York’s offensive explosion, Illinois’ reliever gets the heart of the lineup in order. It’s still 4-0 New York going into the final inning.

Scarangello adds a nice defensive game to his Sunday resume

Half an inning after extending his team’s lead with his 2-RBI single, Scarangello perfectly intercepted a difficult hop on a ground ball from Illinois first baseman Jimmy Macri and ended the game by throwing him out at first base to complete the inning for Ruggiero.

Michael Kipnis prevents further goal threat

After New York’s Dylan DeGaeta bloops a single to right field, Illinois’ right fielder Kipnis throws out Scarangello as he tries to advance to third base. The beautiful play puts Illinois out of the inning, but New York’s four runs in the inning put them ahead.

Dean Scarangello continues strong inning for New York

The third baseman hits a line drive to the right outfield for a 2-RBI base hit, making it 4-0 for New York.

Grant Wanless on the mound for Illinois

After New York scored its first run, Illinois turned to the bullpen in the fourth inning. Wanless made an out against his first batter, but it was a sacrifice fly by Alex Torres. McLean scores and it’s 2-0 for New York.

Chace Curro breaks the goalless tie

New York’s center fielder pulls the fifth pitch of his at-bat between Illinois’ third baseman and shortstop, bringing home a run for his team. It’s now 1-0 New York with runners on second and third after Curro advances due to a lack of defense.

Illinois prevents a run with excellent defense

Second baseman Emiliano Nepomuceno blocked a grounder on his side of the infield, sending the runner back to third base and throwing out the batter at first base. Although New York could have expected a run or two, Illinois instead got the first out of the inning.

New York rolls in the second half of the fourth

A deep base hit brought extra bases to Stephen Grippo, who landed on second base on a fielding error by Illinois’ right fielder. Nicholas McLean moved Grippo to third base one batter later with a bloop hit over the second baseman. New York has runners on first and third base and no outs in the fourth inning.

Vin Ruggiero drives perfectly to fourth place

New York’s starting pitcher made three straight groundouts – two to the second baseman and one back to the pitcher – and got through Illinois’ first lineup unscathed. The game is still 0-0.

Illinois vs. New York scoreless after 3

Neither team managed to score a run in the first half of the day’s first game, although both had multiple hits. This elimination game will come down to the final three frames.
