The “worst tackle” some fans have ever seen resulted in a player being hospitalized with a broken leg and a National League match being suspended on Saturday.

Fans want Woking’s Dion Kelly-Evans to be banned from playing for life after he left Gateshead’s Greg Olley lying on the pitch following his nasty tackle.

Kelly-Evans received a red card and ambulances were called to the pitch as clashes between players broke out just 15 minutes into the game and there were fears for Olley’s health.

Gateshead later confirmed that Olley was in a “stable condition” and announced he would undergo surgery on Sunday after the team won 2-0 after 40 minutes.

“Kelly-Evans should never set foot on a pitch again. No pity for Olley,” wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter.

“That’s the worst tackle I’ve ever seen,” said one.

“Mate, that’s awful. Tackles like that definitely deserve longer bans,” commented another.

“An absolute scumbag. My thoughts are with Greg and the Gateshead boys tonight,” said one.

“Terrible foul and worst case scenario he will only be banned for 4-5 games,” speculated another fan. A direct red card automatically results in a three-game ban, but players can also be punished for longer.

One fan was more sympathetic to Kelly-Evans, writing: “Personally I’m very disappointed for Olley but I think he was just unlucky that his leg was on the ground! Yes, a weak tackle but I don’t think the boy meant any harm! Hopefully Olley will be back soon and back to his best!! Get well soon mate!”

“I understand Gateshead fans aren’t happy about Kelly Evans and it was a bad tackle but the lad is a good lad and I know he will be upset,” said another.

The fans gave Olley a standing ovation after his injury.

Several Gateshead players began arguing with Kelly-Evans and pushing him around while their teammate lay on the pitch receiving medical attention.

A message from Olley’s father to local reporter Mark Carruthers said he was “in good spirits” and “grateful” for the messages sent to him.

Kenton Richardson and Mark Benk scored to ensure Gateshead went home with three points and took the lead in the National League with two wins in two games.

“We’re entering new territory with everything here, so we just have to get around Greg to make sure he’s OK and give him the best support,” said manager and former Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliott after the game.

“I am absolutely disappointed and devastated because this situation was not necessary.”

“We just have to make sure we’re there for Greggy, support him and move on from there.”

Olley, 28, is the captain of the Gateshead club and won the FA Trophy last season and helped the club reach the National League play-offs. He has been at the club since 2018 after joining from Hull.
