Devin Booker’s Season 10: What historic feats could he accomplish next?

Devin Booker’s Season 10: What historic feats could he accomplish next?

Devin Booker is entering his 10th season with the Phoenix Suns this season. 10. A decade. It goes by too fast, doesn’t it? It’s really thin air. In this day and age, when players hop from team to team like frogs on lily pads, that’s something to be respected. Appreciated. Acknowledged.

When Devin takes the court on October 23, he will join the elite ranks of Suns legends: Alvan Adams, a cornerstone for 13 seasons; Kevin Johnson, the electrifying point guard for 12 seasons; Walter Davis, the “Greyhound” with the good shots for 11 seasons; and Steve Nash, the maestro who orchestrated the offense for 10 seasons.

These players didn’t just play; they embodied the Suns’ legacy and shaped the franchise’s identity over the years. Devin’s ten-year tenure will etch his name alongside these icons and mark him as one of the few who truly defined what it means to wear the Suns jersey.

With so much time put in, there are sure to be milestones reached in the 2024-25 season. Booker already begins the year in the top ten of 21 different categories on Basketball-Reference’s Phoenix Suns career leaders page. Are you ready for it?

Assists, defensive rebounds, field goals, field goal attempts, missed field goals, fouls, free throw attempts, free throw percentage, free throws, games, minutes, offensive box plus/minus, offensive win shares, points, points per game, three-point field goal attempts, three-point field goals, turnovers, two-point field goal attempts, two-point field goals, usage rate.

Some statistics are related, others are less flattering. Are you fifth in turnovers? Well, if you play for a long time, your name is bound to appear in the overall results, whether good or bad.

Devin is looking to step up in a few key categories this season, which will really make the 2024-25 season special. Based on his performances so far, Booker has the opportunity to reach the following achievable milestones.

Games played: 598

Alvan Adams leads all Suns with 988 games played, so Booker is 60% of the way to overtaking Double-A. We don’t give Adams enough credit for how long he played in Phoenix and how durable he was. In his 13 years with the Suns, he played an average of 76 games per season.

Booker has an average of 66.4

Based on that number, Booker should overtake Alvin Scott (627) this season to move into 7th place on the all-time list in games played. If he can play 63 games, he will overtake Martix (660) and secure his spot at 6th place. Next season will be the big jump, as he can overtake Kevin Johnson (683) and Dick Van Arsdale (685) to move into 4th place.

Templates: 2,993

The Suns franchise has been treated to a who’s who of Hall of Fame-eligible distributors. From Nash’s wizardry, KJ’s explosiveness and Jason Kidd’s game vision to Chris Paul’s incredible scoring precision, Stephon Marbury’s flair and Dick Van Arsdale’s old-school skill, the list reads like a love letter to the elite of playmakers. And it just goes on.

Devin Booker currently ranks sixth on the Suns’ all-time assist list with 2,993. For those of you who are interested, that’s 199th in NBA history, just behind Marc Gasol (2,996) and Bob Lainer (3,007).

While he is not primarily an assist provider, he has filled that role at various points in his career, including last season when he averaged a career-high 6.9 assists per game (Giggity). Over the course of his career, Book has consistently dished out 5.0 assists per game.

It could be opening night against the Los Angeles Clippers when Booker crosses the 3,000 assist mark, and it won’t be long before he passes Jaosn Kidd’s 3,011 assists in Phoenix. Granted, Kidd did it in half the time (5 seasons, 309 games). That puts him in 5th place compared to Walter Davis’ 3,340.

To move up to 4th place, Devin would have to collect 348 assists this season, something he has already accomplished three times in his career (2018-19 with 433, 2019-20 with 456 and 2023-24 with 472).

Defensive rebounds: 2,065

I’m not sure you’d call D Book a rebounder—he’s averaged 4.0 rebounds in his career. But 3.5 of those are defensive, and his 2,065 is the sixth-best in Phoenix Suns history. He’s averaged 229.4 defensive rebounds per year in his career, with his career high of 297 coming in the 2021-22 season.

If Booker can maintain his average total of 229 defensive rebounds this season, he will move up to 6th on the all-time list, overtaking Mark West (2,204 in 8 seasons) and Deandre Ayton (2,223 in 5 seasons).

Points: 14,529

This is it. The mack daddy of all stats for the Phoenix Suns. The peak of the mountain. The Holy Grail.

Walter Davis last played for the Suns on April 24, 1988. When he scored his last point in Phoenix, his career point total was 15,666, a mark that remained unmatched for decades. That is, until Devin Armani Booker came along and started rewriting the record books.

Booker is 1,137 points shy of The Greyhound’s franchise record. For comparison, if Devin were to score that many points this season, it would be the second-lowest point total of his career. His average is 1,614.3 per season.

Based on Booker’s career average of 24.3 points per game, Devin should need 47 games to overtake Walter Davis.

Booker is looking to etch his name even deeper into the record books, and fans should prepare for a season that will be nothing short of legendary. His record is a masterpiece of dedication, consistency and pure excellence – qualities that will ensure he will play alongside the Suns’ greatest.

And who knows? Maybe he’ll add that most important stat to his Basketball-Reference page: NBA champion.
