It’s summer in the NBA, so it’s time to learn some history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA, with their history dating back to the 1949-50 season.
Over the course of that long period, the team has moved hundreds of players through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire takes a look at the number 22 worn by 18 of those players. This ongoing series will go through every jersey number worn in franchise history.
Here is the list of the 18 who have worn the number 12 in Sixers history:
Lee Shaffer, 1961-1964
Shaffer played three seasons in the NBA for the Syracuse Nationals and was an All-Star in 1963. During his time with the franchise, he averaged 16.8 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Jerry Greenspan, 1963-1965
Greenspan played 25 games for the Sixers in two seasons, wearing the number 22, averaging 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.
Jesse Branson, 1965-1966
Branson played a total of five games for the Sixers during the 1965–66 season, averaging 1 point and 1.8 rebounds.
Kevin Loughery, 1971-1973
Loughery played 106 games for the Sixers over two seasons, averaging 13 points and 3.2 assists.
Larry Jones, 1973–1974
Jones wore two numbers during his time in Philadelphia. In one of those seasons, he wore number 22 and averaged 10 points and 3.2 assists that season.
Connie Norman, 1974-1976
Norman played 77 games for the Sixers in two seasons and averaged 5.6 points and 1.5 rebounds with the number 22.
Perry Warbington, 1974
Warbington played five games for Philadelphia with the number 22 and averaged 2 points and 3.2 assists.
Eric Money, 1979
Money played 29 games for Philadelphia over two seasons, averaging 10.4 points and 3.4 assists.
Andrew Toney, 1980-1988
Toney, also known as “The Boston Strangler,” is the most decorated Sixer to wear number 22 in team history. He was a two-time All-Star, averaged 15.9 points and 4.2 assists, and won the NBA championship with the Sixers in 1983.
Jim Farmer, 1990
Farmer played two games for the Sixers with the number 22 and averaged 3 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Jim Jackson, 1997-1998
Jackson played in 48 games, 47 of them starts, at the beginning of the 1997-98 season before being traded to the Golden State Warriors. He averaged 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds with 4.6 assists for Philadelphia.
Brian Shaw, 1998
Shaw was acquired from the Warriors in the Jackson deal and played 20 games for Philadelphia while wearing the number 22 jersey. With the Sixers, he averaged 6.1 points and 4.4 assists.
Antonio Daniels, 2011
Daniels played four games for the Sixers toward the end of the 2010–11 season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds.
Richaun Holmes, 2015-2018
Holmes began his career in Philadelphia, averaging 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds as an energetic big man off the bench. He currently plays for the Sacramento Kings.
Wilson Chandler, 2018-2019
Chandler played in 36 games during the 2018-19 season, including 32 as a starter, and averaged 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds on 39% shooting from beyond the arc. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in the Tobias Harris deadline deal.
Matisse Thybulle, 2019-2023
Thybulle spent 3.5 seasons in Philadelphia, averaging 4.4 points, 1.5 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He’s been one of the league’s better perimeter defenders since joining in 2019, but his 3-point shooting and overall offense have been inconsistent. He’s now with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Patrick Beverley, 2023-2024
Beverley played 47 games for the Sixers at the start of the 2023-24 season, averaging 6.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks at the trade deadline. He started five of those 47 games.
Cam Payne, 2024
Acquired from the Bucks in the Beverley deal, Payne averaged 9.3 points and 3.1 assists in 31 games for Philadelphia. He shot 38.2% of his three-pointers for the Sixers and made an impact in the playoffs before signing with the New York Knicks in the offseason.
