Bellanova calls Theo the “best left-back in the world” and reacts to the idea of a return to Milan

Raoul Bellanova described Theo Hernandez as the best left-back in the world and also talked about his past at AC Milan and the fact that he is an Inter fan.

Milan’s 2024/25 Serie A season began in dramatic fashion as they overturned a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Torino at the San Siro on Saturday night. Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor came on as a substitute and saved a point.

Bellanova was a thorn in Milan’s side throughout the game and played a major role in the first goal when he rose above Alexis Saelemaekers and headed the ball across the goal. The ball hit the far post but Malick Thiaw was unable to prevent the ball from going into the net, although it was ruled an own goal.

Indeed, Milan’s left side struggled to keep out his attacking runs all evening and Bellanova spoke to both Sky and the journalists who attended his press conference following the 2-2 draw at the San Siro, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Are you disappointed or is it an important point?

“I think there should be a little disappointment in each of us. Any small mistake against this team can ruin everything. We came to San Siro to play against Milan.”

Did you get along well with Paolo Vanoli?

“The coach immediately recognized the qualities of the team. We have a midfield with great ball handlers and by holding the ball you can create more chances. I knew I had to help tonight, especially in the defensive phase. I still have to work on that.”

Does working with the national team help you?

“The experience in the national team makes you realise how much responsibility it is to wear this shirt. Then I try to do my best for Torino, because thanks to Torino I am in the national team.”

How did you feel when you found out two hours before the game that you wouldn’t be playing against someone like Theo?

“Theo is the best left-back in the world today. Playing against him is very stimulating. Then you don’t feel bad when you see that he is not on your side because he is not playing (laughs)… Then Milan is full of champions, so you always have to give 100%.”

Are you thinking of returning to Milan one day?

“Playing here is everyone’s dream. Now I’m concentrating on Turin.”

How do you assess the game and the loss of a two-goal lead?

“We knew we had to play a game of sacrifice, which is always very difficult at San Siro. When you play against these champions, two lapses in concentration are enough to concede two goals. Mine was an own goal, but I’m still happy to have contributed to it. It’s a shame because we could have taken home two more points.”

You played against the team you played for as a youth…

“I’m an Inter fan, but I will always thank Milan because without them I would never have made it to football that counts. They have helped me grow a lot as a person and as a footballer. Playing on this pitch is always a great feeling for me.”
