The Washington Commanders visited the Miami Dolphins for their second preseason game. Jayden Daniels played the first two series but did not lead the team to a touchdown run this week. He finished the day completing 10 of 12 carries for 78 yards and had two runs for another 13 yards.
1st quarter
Coin toss:
Miami won the coin toss and postponed. Let’s rock!
— CWallSports (@cwallse) 17 August 2024
Kickoff return:
Pringle returns the opening kickoff 14 yards.
Davis, Pringle and Kazmeir Allen took turns at kickoff in the first preseason game.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) 17 August 2024
Start orienteering:
Possible trend: The offensive line for opening day will probably start today with Wylie, Cosmi, Biadasz, Allegretti and Lucas
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) 17 August 2024
Jayden Daniels —> Dyami Brown:
Daniels completes the first pass of the evening to Dyami Brown. Good quick cut for Dyami, gain on 8
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Dyami with a second catch. First down achieved. And now the fire alarm goes off in the Dolphins’ press box
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Third catch for Dyami Brown. This makes him the WR2
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
Jayden Daniels —> Terry McLaurin:
Another 3rd down conversion – this time McLaurin and Terry show some toughness to get additional YAC
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Terry McLauren does such a good job of giving his QB a good target no matter how well covered he is…Jayden does a good job of getting rid of the ball quickly
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) 17 August 2024
Third down conversions:
That’s two third down conversions for Daniels. I love the way he handles the situation, but I also love the way Kingsbury calls the play.
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
Opening ride:
Excellent start for the Commander’s offensive.
Kingsbury gets the ball out of Daniels’ hands quickly. Fast pace, even without a huddle. Fast game. All quick outs. Good accuracy and speed with short, safe throws. Was spot on on five of six throws.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) 17 August 2024
On the first drive, Jayden Daniels completed 5 of 7 passes for 46 yards. McLaurin had 2 catches for 27 yards, Dyami Brown had 3 catches for 19 yards.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Kicker competition still open:
The commanders have a problem with kicking.
Riley Patterson – the only kicker on the roster – has now missed both of his kicks this preseason. pic.twitter.com/Jh3EysKSqO
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) 17 August 2024
Riley Patterson missed a 49-yard field goal by about three feet. My goodness.
During the warm-up, he also missed a 42-meter throw.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) 17 August 2024
Starting defense line:
Norell Pollard and Phidarian Mathis start as DT in place of Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.
Pollard and Mathis were also in the starting lineup against the Jets.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) 17 August 2024
Armstrong & KJ Henry at the end with the 1st team D
— Lynnell Willingham (@Nell_BTP) 17 August 2024
Frankie Luvu:
So far, linebacker Frankie Luvu has won every tackle on defense.
— CWallSports (@cwallse) 17 August 2024
Mike Sainristil:
Sainristil with another tackle at the offensive line. He did that last week against the Jets.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Man, Mike Sainristil is playing like a veteran. Had three tackles on this drive so far
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
Your TD:
False start:
2nd week in a row with a false start in the presumed starting lineup of the O-Line. This time it is Wylie, his first game with Jayden, so now is the time to learn
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Brian Robinson:
Impressive run by Brian Robinson to start the drive. Showed patience and explosiveness
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
The Commanders simply ran the same play on two consecutive snaps at the start of their second drive. Brian Robinson made two carries from right tackle, gaining 11 yards each time.
I drew LG Allegretti (made a nice block both times), also got a nice block from John Bates twice.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) 17 August 2024
Jayden Daniels run:
Jayden Daniels has the first real contact of the preseason. Calls his own number to the outside, good run but he didn’t come out of bounds or slide. Gain of 13
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
John Bates:
Say what you will about John Bates, but a blocking TE is a must. The key is to showcase those skills. Will the Commanders keep three or four TEs?
— CWallSports (@cwallse) 17 August 2024
Daniels hits John Bates for the 1st try, but if this throw is a little better, it could have been a big win
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Distribute the ball:
The Commander’s offense distributes the ball to the WRs to see who solidifies their spot at WR #2.
— CWallSports (@cwallse) 17 August 2024
Another penalty from Andrew Wylie:
3rd & 2 and the conversion, but he comes back after Wylie is held. His 2nd penalty of the drive
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
2nd quarter
Riley Patterson FG:
Riley’s kick from 46 yards is good. Commanders are on the board with 7:3 after a 52-yard drive with nine plays
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
Jayden Daniels Tag:
If this was Daniels’ last play of the night (it probably is), it was another all-around impressive performance from the rookie. 10 of 12 for 78 yards and two runs for 13 yards
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 17 August 2024
Tyler Owens:
Tyler Owens pushed his opponent into the returner. My goodness.
— John Keim (@john_keim) 17 August 2024
I missed this the first time, but the coaches will like this: Tyler Owens knocks the punter off his feet on the last punt return. Castro-Fields drove him off the field first; when he tried to come back, Owens ripped off his cleat.
— John Keim (@john_keim) 18 August 2024
Jeff Driskel comes into play:
Jeff Driskel is now QB
— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) 17 August 2024
Jeff Driskell electric in open field
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
Quan Martin:
Quan Martin flies around and makes tackles near LOS
Shows good range as post safety
He and Mike Sainristill are the kind of DBs this group is looking for
Fast game, ball skills, speed
— Lynnell Willingham (@Nell_BTP) 17 August 2024
Riley Patterson’s second missed field goal:
Patterson missed right. He now missed right and left. Every golfer knows that a two-way miss is a huge problem.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 17 August 2024
James Davis:
Jamin Davis sighting.
Davis hit a pass on a clean tackle to a starting QB. He timed his jump well and knocked the ball down. Athletic play in open space.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) 17 August 2024
No pressure:
If you sit in Cover 2, you have to apply pressure
Commanders are not
— Lynnell Willingham (@Nell_BTP) 17 August 2024
Andre Jones:
Nice inside rush by Andre Jones
— Lynnell Willingham (@Nell_BTP) 17 August 2024
Luke McCaffrey:
Great catch by Luke McCaffrey to open this drive. Went up and hauled it in for a 21-yard gain
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 18 August 2024
Jalen Harris:
I really liked the replay of Jalen Harris. He blocked the run to force the opponent inside and made the tackle
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) 18 August 2024
Kazmeir Allen:
Kaz Allen just got HIT on a punt return. I understand he wants to prove to the coaches that 1) he can catch and 2) he’s tough, but you have to catch it fair.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 18 August 2024
Running Back Competition:
McNichols and Wiley will be used before Chris Rodriguez. Wiley looks better so far, and also had the touchdown score last week. The 3rd RB still seems very nebulous
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 18 August 2024
Trent Scott:
Trent Scott hit hard inside
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) 18 August 2024
