Pueblo breaks 50-year-old heat record, more heat expected on Sunday

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — It was a very warm day across the region, with temperatures rising well above average for mid-August. Pueblo finally broke a record with a daily high of 102 degrees. The previous record was set over 50 years ago in 1973.

Other parts of the region also experienced extreme heat, but this time Pueblo was the record holder. Colorado Springs and Alamosa also missed their record by just a few degrees.

As we move toward Sunday, August 18, it looks like the heat will continue, with highs of 90 degrees and lows of 100 degrees forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has already issued a heat advisory for parts of El Paso and Pueblo counties.

The heat advisory is in effect for all shaded, maroon areas (above) from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. To survive this heat, it’s important to limit time spent outside and drink plenty of water. The NWS also recommends getting into the shade as often as possible if you must be outside.

Temperatures will also be sweltering elsewhere in the observation area, especially in the eastern Plains. In the Arkansas River Valley, temperatures will likely be in the low triple digits for most of the day.

In Colorado Springs, the Pikes Peak Airshow is expected to continue in the heat on Sunday, but this time expect scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some models are predicting rain for the region as early as midday.

Current data shows scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms across much of the I-25 corridor and in higher elevations. However, severe weather is expected to remain limited, with gusty winds, lightning and small hail being the primary hazards.

If you want better chances of rain, you are in luck. There will be more monsoon rains throughout the week, bringing rain and thunderstorms every day.
