Las Vegas Raiders vs Dallas Cowboys live game thread

Las Vegas Raiders vs Dallas Cowboys live game thread

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The 2024 NFL preseason continues for the Las Vegas Raiders today at Allegiant Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys.

Remember the Rule of Five. The game is over if the Las Vegas Raiders win this crucial statistical battle. For those who don’t remember, it has to do with sacks and turnovers. If the Raiders have three sacks and allow two, they’re plus-one. They’re plus-three if they have four turnovers and allow just one. That would give them a plus-four for the day. You want to be plus-five every game. On average, teams that meet the Rule of Five win 91 percent of their NFL games.

The Raiders lost to the Minnesota Vikings 24-23 last weekend.

The quarterback battle will again be front and center in this Raiders game. Aidan O’Connell played well on his only drive, taking the Silver and Black down the field from their own end zone for a field goal. O’Connell was seven of nine passing for 76 yards. Gardner Minshew led two touchdown drives and connected with wide receiver DJ Turner for a touchdown pass. Minshew was six of 12 passing for 117 yards. Both quarterbacks had passer ratings over 100.

Coach Antonio Pierce said he hopes to name the starting quarterback after the Raiders’ game against Dallas. How each of the quarterbacks handles the ball will be crucial in convincing Pierce. Protecting the ball is Pierce’s top priority.

The Raiders’ offense shone last week. Wide receivers Turner and Tre Tucker played well, as did rookie tight end Brock Bowers. Running back Zamir White did well as the primary running back. White rushed for 23 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown.

The Las Vegas Raiders had an unimpressive first half in terms of quarterback battles. In five drives, Gardner Minshew, the game’s starter, played poorly. Minshew was 10 of 21 passing for 95 yards. Minshew’s presence and control in the pocket were sloppy, as were his attempts to extend plays. Minshew made numerous bad throws that were thrown too far, too late, or completely missed.

O’Connell entered the game in the second half and played two drives. He was four of eight for 39 passing yards. O’Connell led a scoring drive (a field goal by Carlson) in his first outing after a Cowboys punt return fumble put the Raiders at the Dallas 28. O’Connell also made sloppy mistakes.

So far, both quarterbacks have failed to make the right moves to improve their chances of getting a place in the starting lineup.

The Raiders’ defense has struggled so far, with one of the only bright spots being All-Pro edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Cornerback Jack Jones looked impressive early on but dropped key passes later in the half. Cornerback Jakorian Bennett looked good.
