Nicky Rodriguez won the Craig Jones Invitational at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, defeating four opponents in two days to win $1 million in championship prize money.
Rodriguez opened the first CJI event with a dominant rear-naked choke Submission over Max Gimenis to advance to the quarterfinals. “Nicky Rod” then defeated Owen Livesey with another rear-naked choke to close out Friday and punch his ticket to Saturday’s victory.
Day 2 began as Day 1 ended, with Rodriguez knocking down the tough Adam Bradley with another rear-naked choke. That finish put “Nicky Rod” into a final against top Brazilian boxer Fellipe Andrew. It was another tough task for the two-time ADCC World Championship silver medalist, but Rodriguez pulled it off again with a first-round rear-naked choke to collect the $1 million.
This was the first time grappling fans had been able to witness a CJI event, and it was a success across the board. Of course, Rodriguez was the shining star after forcing every opponent in his path to submission and making winning $1 million look relatively easy.
