54-year-old man shot dead by Akron police on Saturday morning

Early Saturday morning, a 54-year-old man was shot and killed by Akron police while investigating a stolen vehicle, Akron police said.

Shortly after 1 a.m., police investigated the stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a gas station in the 2200 block of East Avenue, police said.

It is unclear what led to the shooting, but an officer fired two shots, hitting the man, police said.

The officers provided first aid, but shortly afterwards the man’s death was pronounced at the scene, police said.

A loaded weapon was seized from the vehicle, police said.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation will lead the investigation, and police said the officer involved, who has worked for the department for two and a half years, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik issued the following statement on the shooting:

“When an incident like this occurs, it is tragic for our city and everyone is affected, especially when a life is lost.

Police-involved shootings are often very nuanced and complex and are some of the most difficult situations a community must navigate. More information will be released in the coming week, including body-worn camera footage of the incident, so that we as a community can get a clearer picture of what happened.

My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and our officials.”
