There is good and bad news about the Cubs’ position in the table

Although it wasn’t without drama in the ninth inning, the Chicago Cubs completed another victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, giving Craig Counsell’s club four of its last five series to tie for second place in the National League Central.

That’s the good news.

The bad? Even in second place, they’re still a whopping 10 games behind Counsell’s former club, the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s hard to imagine the Brewers not taking home the division title, even after having former MVP Christian Yelich out for the rest of the year due to back surgery.

Not only do they look up to Milwaukee in the Central, but they remain outside the race for the NL Wild Card. At 61-63, the Cubs are still two games under .500 and four games out of the third and final wild card spot in the Senior Circuit. There’s still time to make a run (Chicago’s next four series are against Detroit, Miami, Pittsburgh and Washington) – but this team needs to take advantage of every opportunity to have any chance of playing in October.

The Cubs won just the second time in a month in July and started 8-5 here in August. One-point games (18-25) have been tough for this team and they’ll need to find ways to win those games in the final weeks of the season. Improvement on the road (27-36) is also a must.

Chicago is betting on left-hander Shota Imanaga on Sunday and is hoping for a win over the Blue Jays. Get the finale done and then turn the page to an extremely easy stretch of games. One game at a time. That’s the only way to save this season.
