CINCINNATI — For Bengals rookie Josh Newton, it was a game of ups and downs on Saturday, with the cornerback recording five tackles, one loss of yardage and one pass defense.
He also received a pass interference penalty that cost Cincinnati points in a 27-3 loss. Still, it was a good learning experience that included impressive pass defense against Chicago’s first-team offense.
“Up and down. Just be more consistent,” Newton said after the game. “It’s the league. I’m competing against some of the best athletes in America in this sport. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but obviously you want to win more than you lose. But up until today, it hasn’t been that way. So back to the drawing board, back to my coaches, get coached, keep going and get ready for Indy.”
Newton should again receive a lot of snap quotas while Cincinnati continues to work on the hierarchy of its cornerbacks.
“It’s all a learning experience,” Newton explained. “I’m getting used to the referees, how they call, how they see things. So, you know, it’s all good.”
