“A really good performance in the second half” – Arne Slot delighted with Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Ipswich

Arne Slot believed his Liverpool The team showed a “really good performance in the second half” as Liverpool won 2-0 against the promoted side Ipswich Town at Portman Street.

Slot was the first Liverpool coach in 33 years to win his first Premier League game responsible.

The Reds were anything but convincing in the first half, Slot’s team was largely inferior in the early stages

But goals from Diogo Jota And Mohammed Salah, in a much improved second half, gave the Red wines all three points.

  • Perfect performance in the second half

The Liverpool head coach was more than satisfied with his team’s performance in the second half, but stressed that much more was possible if the team played to their “maximum potential”.

Slot said: “I took over a very, very good team with great individual players.

“But these players have to understand that what they did in the first half wasn’t enough and that they can play really, really well if they play to their maximum.

“They showed that in the second half today but it was good to see we scored the goals but the attack that would be featured in Match of the Day was the one that Lucho shot just over the bar.

“This is a path I would like to see the team take more and more. If they are capable of doing so.”

Slot admitted that his team made a “big change” in the second half and stressed that Liverpool should have won more challenges than they did in the first 45 minutes.

Slot said: “We played completely differently in the second half. I have to give credit to Ipswich, they were aggressive and played one-on-one against us all over the pitch to defend us.

“Then it’s about winning the challenges and winning the second balls. I think they won more than us and I think it was a balanced game in the first half.”

“But in the second half we won more tackles, we won more second balls and played more balls backwards, because when the other team takes the risk and you have something like Luis Diaz, Salah and Jota. Then use them!”

The Liverpool head coach praised the second-half performance of Ibrahima Konate, who came on as a substitute in the second half and was immediately aggressive, much to the delight of his head coach.

Slot said: “It helped us that Ibou Konate was able to win his duels against the number nine right from the start.

“As a result, we had a lot of possession and that led to two goals. We could have scored more of those.”

slot praised Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch after his performance, but believed that the team helped bring out the best in him.

Gravenberch played predominantly as a defensive midfielder for Liverpool in the victory over Ipswich and shone especially in the second half.

Slot believes the entire team’s performance in the second half helped boost the midfielder’s performance.

Slot said: “For me, it’s always about the team. So if an individual’s performance is really good, it’s because the team is playing really well.”

“Both goals came from a build-up situation, once by Virgil and once by Alissonso we have to make sure that these players, the attackers, come from promising positions and the team has to help with that.

“The same goes for Ryan, of course. He’s an offensive player, but when we play with him, the rest of the team has to help him too. So that requires a lot of effort.”

“But what we know about Ryan is that he likes to play the ball forward when he sees the opportunity. That helped us today, especially in the second half.”

slot was pleased with his team’s defensive performance but stressed that they need to continue to improve in defence to help the players in deeper midfield.

Slot said: “We defend with eleven players. We can’t do that with a single player.”

“We have to help the Sixes like we do everyone else. It’s not just Virgil and Ibou defending or Virgil and Jarrell, the whole team has to do it.”

“If we defend as an eleven, that would help Ryan or whoever plays there a lot because Macca has played there a lot. I think he has certain qualities that Ryan has as well, but you automatically think of them when it comes to the ball.

“So the team has to make sure that the player in that position is not too exposed. And that’s exactly what happened today because the team really defended in the best way possible.”

Liverpool next face Brentford at Anfield on August 24th.
