The race for the best record in baseball could be one of the best stories of the final 40 games of the season. New York Yankees took the lead with his 73rd victory on Friday. Cleveland Guardian, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia PhilliesAnd Los Angeles Dodgers all have 72 wins before Saturday’s game. Milwaukee Brewers reached 70 yesterday. The Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego PadresAnd Minnesota Twins could reach 70 today. FanGraphs projects all of these teams to finish between 90 and 95 (89.8 for Arizona and 95.4 for New York). We don’t have any superteams reaching 100 wins this year. Instead, we’re seeing a wild final sprint that could end with a score as close as the Olympic 100-meter final.

Today’s headlines

Return to the player weekend

This weekend, Major League fields will be more colorful thanks to custom gear that allows players to celebrate what they enjoy and what matters to them. The league previously held Players’ Weekends from 2017 to 2019. This year’s edition will not feature nicknames on the jerseys. Instead, cleats, gloves, bats and more can be customized. The idea behind the weekend is for fans to get to know the players on a personal level.

“The fans enjoy giving these players a platform to express themselves in a way that they don’t otherwise have access to on a daily basis,” said Noah Garden, MLB’s vice president of operations. If Players’ Weekend continues to be a success, perhaps the league could open up the possibility of allowing more personalized gear throughout the season. Look at the creativity and connection that was on display this weekend.

Backyard Bobby joins two Royals greats

Bobby Witt Jr. hit his 25th home run of the year with a bat bearing the image of Pablo Sanchez from the Baseball in the backyard series of video games. Witt’s season is shaping up to be one worthy of the virtual all-around star Sanchez, and now his numbers put him in the same category as two Kansas City Royals Sizes. Witt joins Carlos Beltran And Bo Jackson as the only Royals to hit 25 home runs and steal 25 bases in consecutive seasons. Witt is already the only Royal to hit 30/30 (30 HR and 49 steals last season).

Pirates win sea battle

The best duel of the starting pitchers on Friday Logan Gilbert and the Seattle Mariners against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The pair produced nearly identical results. Gilbert managed 6.1 IP, striking out six times and allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. Skenes managed 6.0 IP, striking out six times and allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. Both got a home run into the same right-field zone. Gilbert threw the fastest pitch of his career at 100.2 mph. Skenes picked up his seventh win and the Pirates ended a 10-game losing streak. Seattle fell to 4.5 games back in the AL West.

The best moments of yesterday

Seiya Later

The theme of Friday’s Players Weekend was fun. The first game of the day – between a team finishing last and a team eliminated from the wild-card competition – ended with a walk-off and celebratory hugs on the basepaths.

Who the treasure is for

Trea Turner left his former team with a hit off the wall that would have been enough for extra bases at any other point in the game. Washington Nationals are hopeful for their future, but their former championship shortstop winning for a division rival must hurt. And the Philadelphia Phillies Gotta love to see this after a rough stretch following the All-Star break.

Hide your scoreboards

If the Houston Astros is hit, the stadium’s maintenance crew had better be prepared to take care of the scoreboards, whether they are digital (like the Jumbotron Jordan Alvarez hammered in Tampa Bay) or manually (like this Jose Altuve ball that ended the fourth inning for the Yankees).

In fact, the Astros might want to turn off the scoreboard because of the results. Chicago White Sox ended Houston’s eight-game winning streak with a 5-4 victory. The trade pieces that stayed on the South Side helped the White Sox to 30 wins. Luis Robert Jr. hit two home runs and Garrett Crochet had 9 strikeouts in four innings.

Jackson, Jackson and Jackson

There is so much history in baseball, and we still see strange moments like all of the Jackson Three hitting a triple on the same day. According to EverythingBirthday.com, the Jackson name was still used for another decade after Jackson Holiday (2003), MichaelJackson (2003) and Jackson Chourio (2004) were born. We may be entering a new era of Jackson-centered statistical innovation.
