York County, PA: Firefighter hit and killed

According to local police, a firefighter police officer was struck and killed while directing traffic in Newberry Township on Friday afternoon.

According to a press release, the fire trooper was directing traffic near Red Mill Road and Corn Hill Road because of another accident nearby when a collision occurred around 2:20 p.m.

The York County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the area at 2:27 p.m. Before the coroner was called, Newberry Township Police posted on Facebook about an accident at the intersection of Red Mill Road and Yocumtown Road, just a few hundred yards from the intersection where the officer was struck.

Newberry Township Police have requested assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police, who will lead the investigation.

Newberry Township Police issued the following statement in the police report:

“On behalf of the Newberry Township Police Department and the Department of Public Safety, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the deceased fire officer for his service to our community. We also extend our sincere condolences to the family and all of their fellow responders during this difficult time.”

As of Friday evening, no information about the deceased officer had been released.
