Dougherty County releases property tax increase proposal; public meetings held

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – Dougherty County has announced its proposed tax rate, or millage rate, for 2024, which includes an increase.

The new tax rate would increase the statewide property tax by 0.15 percent, according to a statement released Thursday.

The planned increase means that the new tax rate would increase by 0.28 per thousand to a total rate of 19,069. Without the increase, the rate would be 19,041 per thousand. According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, the average tax rate per county in the state is 30 per thousand.

The county gave an example of the increase: “The proposed tax increase for a home with a market value of $125,000 is approximately $1.34, and the proposed tax increase for non-homeownership property with a market value of $125,000 is approximately $1.40.”

The proposed 0.15% increase would also benefit the Special Services District. If passed, the tax rate would be capped at 9.173 per thousand, an increase of 0.014 per thousand. Without the increase, the tax rate would be 9.159 per thousand.

The county also gave an example of the service district increase: “The proposed tax increase for a home with a market value of $150,000 is approximately $0.81 and the proposed tax increase for non-homeownership property with a market value of $125,000 is approximately $0.70.”

Public hearings on the possible increase are planned for:

  • Monday, August 19, at 10 a.m. in the Government Center in Room 100, 222 Pine Avenue, Albany
  • Monday, August 19, 6 p.m. in Room 100
  • Monday, August 26, 10 a.m. in Room 100
